Your English journey starts here...

Welcome to the English Department! The following information will give you an idea of the work that pupils cover during Year 7 and suggest some ways that you may be able to support your child to make progress in English. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school straight away.

The English Department believes that every pupil at Ysgol Bro Gwaun has a voice and all pupils will get many opportunities to develop the way they use that voice. Pupils in Year 7 will learn through talk, stretching their thinking through discussion and debate. Pupils in Year 7 will also learn to talk by learning about the qualities of effective speakers and having the opportunity to present in front of an audience.

We are passionate about literature at Ysgol Bro Gwaun and our programme of study will enable all Year 7 pupils to share in that passion. During Year 7, pupils will get the chance to immerse themselves into the world of an incredible novel, engage with the work of some great poets and experience the joy of studying Shakespeare. We are confident that the stories we share will foster a lifelong love of literature.

There are many opportunities for Year 7 pupils to develop their original writing voice at Ysgol Bro Gwaun. From narrative writing to nonfiction, pupils will get the chance to improve the content and accuracy of their writing. We know that they will be inspired by the authors, poets and playwrights they come across throughout the year.

Over the course of the year, assessments will take place each half term. The assessments are an opportunity to understand your current results in English and, most importantly, how to keep getting better.

Hopefully this will give you some idea of what to expect in Year 7. We want every pupil to enjoy their time in the English department and we also want them to achieve their potential. If there are any problems, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

How you can help:
