Health and Wellbeing at Ysgol Bro Gwaun

At Ysgol Bro Gwaun we believe that the health and wellbeing of our pupils is at the heart of the journey to reaching full potential and success. Pupils build a strong relationship with their tutors and year group team, supporting physical, social and emotional needs through a robust PSE programme.  This diverse series of lessons includes topics such as:

Personal wellbeing, Saying No to racism, Digital Competency, Money Talk, B- word bullying and the Democracy cookbook.

Pupils are given the opportunity to develop skills through community challenges, designated health days, dynamo projects and mock elections.

We are fortunate at Ysgol Bro Gwaun to be supported by our local Police Liason Officer who delivers key information on safe use of the internet, thinking about drinking/alcohol and developing respectful relationships. Our local Fire Service also delivers key safety messages during the school year.

Fitness and a healthy lifestyle are encouraged through a range of sporting clubs and 5x60 opportunities.  The benefits of a healthy diet and understanding of nutritional food content is high on our priorities to help develop a healthy body and mind.

Support services are available through the on-site Youth Service, school nurse and school counsellor, as well as the Pupil Support Service and all play an important role in improving and maintaining high attendance.

Pupils are also trained in mindfulness, developing an awareness of thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations and surrounding environment with openness and curiosity. These have a variety of research-backed impacts, including reduction in stress and improvements in school satisfaction, emotional regulation and focus.

With the development of the new curriculum to be introduced in 2022, Health and Wellbeing is recognised even more as an integral link to all areas of learning and underpins the four key purposes in ensuring successful futures for all our pupils as:

  • Ambitious, capable learners who are ready to learn throughout their lives.
  • Enterprising, creative contributors who are ready to play a full part in life and work.
  • Ethical, informed citizens who are ready to be citizens of Wales and the world.
  • Healthy, confident individuals who are ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society.
