At Ysgol Bro Gwaun, our curriculum ensures that all pupils acquire the knowledge, skills, and experiences needed to succeed academically and personally. Deeply rooted in our local community and Welsh culture/Cynefin, our learning provision delivers an ambitious, inclusive, and rich educational journey. We nurture curious, resilient, and high-achieving learners who are proud, active members of their community.
Our entire curriculum is structured around the Four Purposes of Curriculum for Wales, empowering pupils to become:
· Ambitious, Capable Learners: Driven to achieve, build deep subject expertise, and think critically throughout their lives.
· Enterprising, Creative Contributors: Ready to solve real-world problems, innovate, and apply practical skills in life and work.
· Ethical, Informed Citizens: Respectful, active citizens of Wales and the wider world who value human rights, equality, and diversity.
· Healthy, Confident Individuals: Equipping pupils to build emotional resilience, lead fulfilling lives, and thrive as members of society.
· Broad & Balanced: Delivers full coverage across all six Areas of Learning and Experience (AoLEs) while preserving distinct subject specialisms.
· Inclusive & Adaptable: Guarantees an ambitious core entitlement for all, supported by targeted interventions and bespoke learning pathways.
· Relevant & Authentic: Connects classroom learning directly to real-world contexts, local heritage (cynefin), and post-16 opportunities.
· Coherent & Progressive: Carefully sequenced learning ensures knowledge, understanding, and skills build logically and systematically over time.
· Wellbeing & Achievement: Integrates emotional, social, and physical health alongside academic standards.
· Responsive and evolving: We regularly review and improve our curriculum to ensure it meets the needs of our pupils. We consider pupil voice, feedback from parents and the wider school community, our own evaluation, and developments in education.
· Bilingualism & Welsh Identity: Nurtures confidence in Cymraeg and fosters pride in Welsh culture across school life.
In Years 7–9, pupils follow the Curriculum for Wales, applying subject knowledge creatively and developing key competencies to adapt to an evolving world. Learning is organised into the six national Areas of Learning and Experience (AoLEs):
· Languages, Literacy & Communication: (Cymraeg, English, French) – Develops confident oral and written communication, literature appreciation, subject-specific reading skills, and functional bilingualism.
· Mathematics & Numeracy: Builds mathematical fluency, problem-solving abilities, financial capability, and data analysis in practical contexts.
· Science & Technology: Integrates scientific inquiry, design technology, and digital competence to prepare pupils for technological innovation.
· Humanities: (Geography, History, Religion, Values & Ethics [RVE], Business Studies) – Explores identity, chronology, global perspectives, and ethical decision-making.
· Expressive Arts: (Art, Drama, Music) – Fosters creative expression, performance confidence, and cultural appreciation.
· Health & Wellbeing: (Physical Education, Health Education, RSE, Personal Development/Tyfu) – Focuses on physical development, mental resilience, and personal relationships.
In Years 10 and 11, pupils work towards formal qualifications that prepare them for further education, training, or work. Our upper school timetable balances a strong core of required subjects with flexible choices, allowing pupils to focus on their personal strengths and career ambitions.
All pupils study a core foundation of English, Mathematics, Science, Cymraeg, Ethics, Health and Wellbeing, and the Welsh Baccalaureate.
Alongside these core studies, pupils customise their education by selecting three option subjects. They can choose practical and technical routes such as Agriculture, Engineering, Product Design, Food & Nutrition, or Digital Technology; explore commercial routes like Business Studies and Tourism; or choose creative and academic options including Art, Drama, Music, Geography, History, PE, Religious Studies and French. To support our bilingual commitment, several options—including Drama, Geography, History, Religious Studies and Music—are offered through both Welsh and English
