Providing for the needs of all pupils
As a Department, we support pupils to develop their wellbeing and to develop academically. Collaboratively we work with families, external advisors and key staff within the school to offer personal and emotional support to individuals. Our aim is to ensure that pupils’ needs are met and that the best provision, wellbeing and care is delivered.
The new ALN Reform : The Additional Learning Needs and Education Tribunal Wales Act means that all pupils will be supported in the best way to suit their needs, in a pupil-centered approach. Ysgol Bro Gwaun’s ALN Department is an inclusive Department, and ‘reasonable adjustments’ are made to ensure all pupils are fully participating in school life.

Hwb Hub Intervention Provision
The Hwb Hub is a targeted intervention provision designed to support pupils’ academic, social, emotional, and learning needs through focused interventions.
The intervention teacher/co-ordinator will oversee and deliver mathematics interventions for Key Stage 3 pupils who require additional support to develop their numeracy skills and confidence. The Hub will also provide structured social skills interventions for identified pupils, helping them to develop communication, interaction, and relationship-building skills.
Within the Hwb Hub, a dedicated ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) room provides a safe and nurturing environment where pupils can access emotional literacy support and targeted wellbeing interventions.
Pupils may also receive additional specialist interventions based on identified needs and recommendations from teachers, support staff, and assessment data. These may include:
The Hwb Hub aims to remove barriers to learning, promote independence, build confidence, and equip pupils with the skills they need to engage successfully in school life and make progress across the curriculum.
The Hwb Hub also serves as a supervised safe space during break times and lunchtime for identified pupils who may benefit from additional support with social interaction, emotional regulation, anxiety, or managing less structured parts of the school day. The provision offers a calm, supportive environment staffed by familiar adults, helping pupils to feel secure, build positive relationships, and successfully engage in school life.
Our vision is to provide support that enables pupils to achieve their potential academically, socially, emotionally, and independently, while ensuring they feel safe, supported, and valued within the school community.

Corlan
KS4 pupils receive academic advice when needed within this small setting, in order to support with their work. We offer an alternative curriculum to individuals as needed and/or as advised by County professionals.
Cyfle
Cyfle is a targeted behavioural and wellbeing intervention that provides personalised support for pupils with emerging or significant social, emotional and behavioural needs. The provision focuses on strengthening positive relationships, improving emotional resilience, and enabling pupils to re‑engage with learning through structured outreach activities that develop key skills, including literacy and numeracy.
The programme uses each pupil’s interests, strengths and motivations as a foundation for learning. This approach helps to increase engagement, reduce avoidance behaviours, and promote a more positive disposition towards education. Through highly engaging, interest‑based tasks, pupils develop their basic literacy and numeracy skills in a way that feels relevant, accessible and achievable.
Cyfle places strong emphasis on building consistent, trusting relationships between pupils and staff. These relationships provide the stability and emotional security pupils need to regulate their behaviour, manage difficult emotions and develop effective coping strategies. Staff model positive interactions, reinforce expectations, and provide clear, supportive guidance that helps pupils to make better choices.
ALN Interventions
HLTAs, Teaching Assistants, the youth worker, counsellor, and other key staff deliver appropriate interventions to pupils, as and when is needed. Advice is given by the ALNCo.
Screening & Exam Arrangements
Pupils are screened and tested. Where appropriate, ‘access arrangements’ are put into place for internal and external exams.
