Reading in YBG
Supporting Reading at Home
Our expectation is that every child at YBG will develop the habit of reading for 20 minutes every day. Please continue to encourage your child to read at home. You can model the reading behaviour you want to see. Does your child see you reading at home? Sometimes all it takes is the right book recommendation to get a child reading.
Use the website Book for Topics https://www.booksfortopics.com/ to help with book recommendations for different topics and fans of different authors. The website has great ‘branching out’ ideas to introduce news books to fans of books like Harry Potter and the Hunger Games. Many students enjoy reading the news. Encourage your child to read from trusted news sites and use the news for discussions at home. Some links to free news sites include:

Our local libraries are great resources. Please use this link https://www.pembrokeshire.gov.uk/pembrokeshire-libraries to connect with your local library in Pembrokeshire.
Getting your child to regularly read at home is the key goal. However, if you want to further support them with their reading, you can ask them questions about what they are reading. Here are some recommended questioning strategies:
1. Question Before Reading
Do you know anything about this topic?
2. Question During Reading
Ask about a specific word or sentence: What does this mean?
3. Question After Reading
What was interesting about this? or If this was not interesting, why?

The Ysgol Bro Gwaun Library
The Ysgol Bro Gwaun library is a welcoming and calm space where pupils can discover new books, develop their love of reading and enjoy some calm time during break and lunch.
Our librarian, Mrs Katie Hill, supports a wide range of activities designed to encourage pupils to read for pleasure. Year 7 and Year 8 pupils can work their way through ‘The List’, with Mrs Hill helping pupils keep track of the books they have read and recommending new titles along the way. For Year 8, our Bookopoly board encourages pupils to explore books linked to different subjects and broaden their reading choices.
Pupils are always encouraged to borrow a book, and Mrs Hill is on hand to recommend something to suit every interest and reading level. The library also has puzzles, quizzes and other activities to enjoy.
Throughout the year, the library hosts special events, including our annual Scholastic Book Fair and a range of World Book Day activities.
The library also has one of the best views in the school! Come and visit us soon and enjoy the dramatic view over the Port of Fishguard. It is an inspiring place to read.
Reading Interventions at Ysgol Bro Gwaun
•We use scores from the Welsh National Tests and the NGRT reading tests to identify pupils who would benefit for the support of a reading intervention.
•We aim to minimise the disruption to lessons. Pupils will have a short period of 8 reading intervention sessions over 3 weeks. Each session lasts about 40 minutes.
•Most pupils identified for reading interventions will complete the ARROW Reading intervention programme, led by our trained reading intervention specialist. More information about the ARROW reading intervention can be found here https://www.arrowtuition.co.uk/
•Pupils identified as needing a higher level of support for reading may be selected for our Read, Write Inc. intervention group. This group will be led by a specialist teacher trained in Read, Write Inc.
Thank you for supporting your child’s progress with reading.
