Attendance & Punctuality
At Ysgol Bro Gwaun, our shared goal is simple: every child in school, every day, achieving their full potential.
Regular attendance is key to every pupil’s success. Every lesson matters, and missed learning can be difficult to recover. GCSE success highlights this clearly: pupils across the school achieve strong outcomes when supported by high levels of attendance, which gives them consistent access to high-quality teaching, feedback, revision opportunities, and intervention support.
Attendance Targets & Breakdown
Our school attendance target for all pupils is 95% or above.
A good level of attendance is described as being over 95%. Pupils who fall below 90% are classified by education authorities as being persistently absent and may require formal support or intervention from the local authority.
95% – 100% – Best chance of success; full access to learning opportunities.
90% – 94% – At least 2 weeks of learning missed; pupils will need to spend time catching up.
85% – 89% – At least 4 weeks of learning missed; risk of underachieving.
80% – 84% – At least 5½ weeks of learning missed; significant impact on progress.
Below 80% – Over 7½ weeks of learning missed; missing out on a broad education.
Did you know? Missing just one day every two weeks adds up to almost four weeks of lost learning across a single school year.
Working Together: How We Support Each Other
At Ysgol Bro Gwaun, we believe that good attendance is a shared partnership built on trust, care, and open communication. We are here to listen, guide, and support your family every step of the way.
How Parents & Carers Can Partner With Us:
· Encourage Daily Routines: Help your child build confidence and healthy habits by supporting regular attendance and helping them feel prepared for each school day.
· Keep Us Updated: Let us know as early as possible on each day of absence so we know your child is safe and accounted for.
· Plan Appointments Thoughtfully: Schedule routine medical and dental check-ups outside school hours whenever possible, so your child doesn’t miss out on important learning or time with friends.
· Share Medical Notes When Needed: Provide medical evidence or appointment details when requested, helping us keep accurate safety and attendance records.
· Reach Out Early: Talk to us whenever personal, medical, or family circumstances affect your child’s wellbeing or attendance—we are here to help and can adapt support to suit your child’s needs.
How We Support Our Pupils To:
· Feel Welcome & Ready: Arrive at school feeling supported, valued, and ready to engage in the day’s learning.
· Participate fully: Engage in scheduled lessons and school activities, knowing that every member of our staff is here to help them succeed.
· Speak Up & Seek Help: Talk to a form tutor, head of year, or any trusted member of staff whenever something feels overwhelming or makes coming to school difficult.
