Reading for Pleasure at YBG – 5 in 5

•1. It is expected that all Year 7 and Year 8 pupils will have a reading book as part of their mandatory equipment.

•2. It is expected that all Year 7 and Year 8 pupils will read for 5 minutes at the start of Lesson 5.

•3. Pupils in Year 7 are encouraged to read ‘The List’ as a challenge.

•Reading Everyday Creates a routine.

Reading Interventions at Ysgol Bro Gwaun

•We use scores from the Welsh National Tests and the NGRT reading tests to identify pupils who would benefit for the support of a reading intervention.

•We aim to minimise the disruption to lessons. Pupils will have a short period of 8 reading intervention sessions over 3 weeks. Each session lasts about 40 minutes.

•Most pupils identified for reading interventions will complete the ARROW Reading intervention programme, led by our trained reading intervention specialist. More information about the ARROW reading intervention is found on the following slides.

•Pupils identified as needing a higher level of support for reading may be selected for our Read, Write Inc. intervention group. This group will be led by a specialist teacher trained in Read, Write Inc.
