Dear parent/carer,

You may be aware that the Education Minister at Welsh Government has outlined arrangements which all schools will follow when returning to school in January. These include the provision of two planning days in addition to any pre-planned inset days, and the return to a high level of covid related operating procedures. During the planning days, both the school and teaching staff will be preparing for possible future online teaching requirements. Schools are also required to provide child-care for Key Workers and vulnerable pupils. Please see letter from the Director of Education, Mr Steven Richard-Downes.

I wish to outline the following arrangements at Ysgol Bro Gwaun:

  • Tuesday 4th January: Planned INSET day. No school for pupils and childcare provision is not available on this day.
  • Wednesday (5th) and Thursday (6th) January. Welsh Government Planning day. No school for pupils, however childcare provision for Key Workers and vulnerable pupils is available on these days. Please contact wendy.davies@ysgolbrogwaun.com by 3:00pm on Tuesday 4th January to book childcare places. Online Google Classroom teaching will only be available for Year 10 pupils sitting GCSE examinations in English Literature (see below for details)
  • Friday 7th January. All pupils to return to school as normal.

Year 10 GCSE English Literature Examination (Tuesday 11th January)- Year 10 parents only.

Pupils have been preparing hard for this GCSE exam and we would like to remind you that attendance is essential on the day of the exam.

To help your child prepare for the exam, we have scheduled the following mandatory revision sessions:

  • Wednesday, 5th January at 10AM – A one-hour online Google Classroom session with their English teacher. All Year 10 pupils are expected to be online to complete this revision session with their English teacher. The teacher will then give directed independent revision activities to complete for the rest of the day.
  • Thursday, 6th January at 10AM – A one-hour online Google Classroom session with their English teacher. All Year 10 pupils are expected to be online to complete this revision session with their English teacher. The teacher will then give directed independent revision activities to complete for the rest of the day.
  • Friday, 7th January (return to school for all pupils) – All Year 10 pupils will have revision activities at school with their English teacher.
  • Monday, 10th January – All Year 10 pupils will have English revision lessons during Lesson 4 and Lesson 5.
  • Tuesday, 11th January – English Literature GCSE exam for all Year 10 pupils.

As the sessions on Wednesday, 5th January and Thursday 6th January are online, it is essential that your child has access to a device so they can use Google Classroom. The following link will send you to a form to let the school know if you need to borrow a school device so your child can access Google Classroom at home:

Thank you for supporting your child’s revision for the GCSE English Literature exam. There are many revision materials on Google Classroom so please encourage your child to revise regularly in preparation for the exam on Tuesday, 11th January.

School Based Procedures in January.

Throughout the Autumn term the school has continued to operate a high level of covid related procedures designed to mitigate the spread of the virus. We have applied procedures which have gone beyond those recommended by Welsh Government. We are proud and pleased with the way that pupils have complied with these procedures which they now see as part of the normal operation of the school. Pupils will therefore not see a big change in the way the school operates in January, and of our expectations of them. We will however be reintroducing temperature checks for all pupils and staff as they arrive at school and also reinforcing key messages and the importance of following our procedures to ensure the safety of all.

Lateral Flow Testing (LFT testing).

We continue to encourage all pupils to take part in the LFT testing programme. This is a key strategy to help identify cases at an early stage, thus ensuring that the virus does not spread to others during the phase where symptoms are yet to develop.  Please contact wendy.davies@ysgolbrogwaun.com for additional free testing kits (if required) or to begin taking part in the programme.

Welsh Government now recommend that testing is carried out 3 times per week prior to and following the return to school. Reporting should take place on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. (Tests could therefore be carried out on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings). Please ensure that your child takes a test prior to their return on the 7th of January.

On behalf of everyone at Ysgol Bro Gwaun, I would like to thank you for your continued support throughout these challenging and uncertain times and wish you a happy, relaxing and safe Christmas.

Paul Edwards
