Bro Gwaun pupil Rachel Lewis to swim in British Championships

A young Fishguard swimmer will next month compete in two events at the British Summer Championships in Glasgow.

Rachael Lewis, 14, has achieved demanding qualifying times in the 200m and 100m breaststroke for the meet, held from July 23rd to the 28th.

She has hit a rich vein of form this year, winning her first medals at the Welsh Easter Nationals, where she grabbed silver in both the 100m and 200m breaststroke.

The Ysgol Bro Gwaun pupil started swimming in the ‘learn to swim’ programme at Fishguard Leisure Centre, before joining Fishguard Flyers Swimming Club. She currently swims full-time with Pembrokeshire County Swimming at Haverfordwest.

Friederike Schmidt, coach at Fishguard Flyers, said: “This is a huge achievement for Rachael and we are all so incredibly proud of her and the progress she is making. She is a great example to all our younger swimmers.”

Lewis has also qualified in several other events for the Welsh Summer Nationals, which will take place at the National Pool in Swansea from 29th July to 2nd August.

The Fishguard club has 10 members, including Lewis, who have achieved qualifying times for the Welsh Nationals. The club holds regular trials and any youngsters who are interested in swimming are encouraged to get in contact.

Fishguard Flyers is one of six swimming clubs in Pembrokeshire, along with Haverfordwest Seals, Milford Tigers, Preseli Panthers, Tenby Dolphins and Pembroke & District. These development clubs feed their best swimmers into Pembrokeshire County Swimming.

Lewis is one of four Pembrokeshire swimmers to have hit the tough qualifying standards to compete at the British Summer Championships, along with Henry White and Josh McDowell of Haverfordwest Seals, and Rhys Davies of Pembroke & District.
