STEM Club Success

On Thursday 12th April, three Ysgol Bro Gwaun year 9 pupils, namely Tomos Davies, Joss Lerwill and Zoe Latrobe, participated in the STEM club finals day held at Valero. The day saw the culmination of the ten week after schools STEM club where the students participating had the opportunity to develop skills in Chemistry, Computer Aided Design, 3D printing, Electronics, Welding and driving a tractor round an obstacle course (via a simulator!).

To demonstrate their acquired skills, pupils competed for their county in a friendly Pembrokeshire V Carmarthenshire showdown.  All performed fantastically well, with Pembrokeshire coming out victorious and winning the Valero STEM club cup. Individual task prizes were also awarded with congratulations given to Zoe Latrobe gaining joint first in the Welding Challenge and first position in the Electric Challenge.

The highly successful event was attended by Assembly member and Minister for Lifelong Learning Eluned Morgan, Councillors from Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire, Directors of Valero, Careers Wales, ITV, parents and teachers from Ysgol Bro Gwaun, Emma Bowen and Ysgol Dewi Sant, Carolin Blair.

Massive thanks goes to Pembrokeshire college for their support in running the clubs and to Valero for the amazing welcome and hospitality received.  Pupils gained many new skills, were presented with new experiences and were suitably challenged within the programme.  The pupils gained a valuable insight into the fantastic opportunities presented within STEM future careers and encouragement for more girls to take up a career involving Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.
